It's Not Just Mud Season...

...it's also apparently road kill season.

Over the past few days I have seen an inordinate number of dead animals on the side of the highway.  (None of which were my fault.  My kill count remains at two.)

I've seen:
Hawk (3)
Owl
Skunk (2)
Deer
Raccoon
Porcupine
Fox
Coyote
Squirrel (804*)

Is this because I live in the woods a small town?  Has anyone else noticed this?  Am I imagining things or does the whole melting snow/mating season thing really drive the roadkill count up during the spring?

* An estimate.

  1. I think you have an unnatural ability to spot and identify roadkill.

  2. Haha I wouldn't say unnatural. You just don't get much wildlife up there in the big city.

  3. True. Every once and a while I do see a person lying by the side of the road though.

  4. I have noticed many dead woodchucks and beavers around lately, and several rabbits. I think your theory on spring bringing out more road kill is correct. Also, when I used to take the commuter rail, I would spend the hour looking out the window for dead human bodies - seriously. It was a weird hobby, but I can't help but think that in these dense woods there have got to be a few somewhere!
