Hello January

January is a tough month. Christmas has come, New Year's has passed and all the excited about the holiday season has waned. Sure, there is the hope and promise of a new year but the reality is that January is cold and dark. It's snowy and blizzardy and it seems like spring and the promise of warm weather is oh so far away.

Because of this, January seems like the perfect time to buckle down and work on some goals.

1. Clean my apartment...for real.
5. Get new tires.

Well Hello There

It's been a while my friends, but I'm still here. You may have been wondering (or not) what I've been up to. Well...

I've been having adventures in 3rd grade.
I've been making kitchen disasters.
I've been baking mini cupcakes.
I've been simultaneously wishing for a snow day and spring.
I've been composing blog posts in my head at night while I can't sleep.
I've been having CRAZY dreams.
I've been walking outside.
I've been playing with my iPad (school supplied).
I've been redecorating my bedroom.
I've been doing yoga.
I've been traveling to Maine.
I've been dreaming of summer adventures.
I've been coveting a ukulele.

Dear 2012,

Where do I even begin? You were everything and nothing that I expected. Instead of lamenting all the, "I wish I did ____ this year" thoughts, let's take a look at what I did manage to do this year. Day by day and week by week, my life seems rather inconsequential and boring. But when you look at it retrospectively, perspective shifts. Forgotten are the days full of laziness, the disappointments, and the little frustrations. What you are left with is highlights of a year (hopefully) well spent.

In January I set some pretty easy New Year's Resolutions and became a Mac user. I started the year off strong on the fitness front and completed my 50 mile challenge. I walked, biked, and ellipticalled away the cold winter days. I started a new year full of adventures in second grade. And began the frantic process of trying to complete and recap my 30 Before 30 list.

In February I turned the big 29+1. I managed to celebrate instead of bemoan my big birthday. Immediately following my birthday I was harshly thrust into the world of adulthood. In one week I managed to deal with the leaking and destruction of my bathroom ceiling and attend a scary DUA hearing where I had to represent myself to resolve a dispute over my unemployment benefits.

In March I took biking to the next level and biked an entire marathon! It seemed like a really good idea and I was glad that I was able to accomplish it but man on man, did certain parts of my body hate it. I created a soundtrack of my 30th year. And I hung out with crazy second graders and stayed mostly healthy while they all got the plague.

In April I was almost bankrupted paying taxes on the previous year's unemployment benefits. That was another harsh grownup lesson. I supported the entertainment industry by seeing The Hunger Games and Titanic 3D in theaters. I managed to escape to Maine for a few days to relax and recharge during school vacation.

In May I spent a lot of time not blogging. I had some serious thoughts about the passing of time. I also took lots of pictures of clouds.

In June school ended. I dog sat while my parents took off for Alaska and I watched soooo much Dawson's Creek. I created a Summer Fun List of activities that I wanted to do over the summer to make it as memorable as possible. I went back to Maine and the BFF's Weddingpalooza officially began. I ordered a dress, we made invitations, and spent lots of time being overly girly.

In July I visited my first lighthouse of the summer and visiting every lighthouse in Maine officially became a new obsession. I drove west to catch up with an old friend and reminisced at Katie's with soft serve. In one exhausting but amazing weekend, I helped the BFF celebrate her bachelorette party and bridal shower.

In August I was insanely busy. I tutored, I traveled, and I went back to school. M came to visit and we explored Boston, Concord, Salem and Maine in 5 days. I headed to Vermont for the BFF's wedding weekend and wore lots of pretty dresses. My best work friends moved away. After some last minute tutoring, I returned to school to new adventures in 3rd grade.

In September I explored museums and apple orchards. I registered to vote, sat through the first of many boring graduate classes, and had a smoothie disaster. I said goodbye to summer and hello to fall. I created a short Fall Fun List of things that make fall so wonderful.

In October it rained a lot. It was warm and swampy and nothing like the brisk and clear October that I love. I listened to Mumford and Sons over and over while I ran and walked many, many miles. I watched and live-blogged some of the Presidential debates, celebrated 10/11/12, and made it through Hurricane Sandy. Halloween came and went without any pumpkin carving.

In November I finally joined the 21st century and got an iPhone! I voted for president and found a lot of money on the ground. I enjoyed the sunny, brisk October-like weather and headed to Maine to celebrate Thanksgiving with my parents.

In December I was super crafty. I made my own advent calendar and holiday cards. I used the money I found at the mall to donate things to the food pantry, Toys for Tots, and the hat and mitten drive at school. I celebrated 12/12/12 and baked a lot of cupcakes. I mourned the loss of life and innocence in Connecticut. I survived the end of the world, celebrated Christmas and completed the 2nd Annual, Unofficial Boxing Day 5K.

So 2012 I don't really know what I expected from you. I think the main take away from this year is that life is messy and you can't really plan for anything. You just have to make the best of what you have and try as hard as you can to enjoy yourself along the way.

Here's hoping for a wonderful 2013!

XOXO,
Amy

In November

At the beginning of November I wrote:

Please be better than October.
Please be sunnier.
Please be filled with more friends and family.
Please be full of adventures.
Please be full of happy days.
Please be all of these things...and I will be thankful.

And it turns out that November was all of these things. The swampiness and dreariness of October cleared and November turned out to be a gorgeous fall month...cool at times, cold at others, but sunny and beautiful.

I had lots of friend dates this month. I made mini books with N and started quilts with S. I celebrated a belated Halloween with D, O, K, L, and lots of others. I spent Thanksgiving in Maine with Everyday Mom and Dad.

And got to FaceTime with Everyday Brother.

In November, I took adventures to Maine, Western Mass, and Boston. I wandered Fanueil Hall for Tuba Christmas and saw men balancing on ladders with machetes.

I had some happy days and some less happy days but overall it was a good month. Be prepared for lots of holiday cheer soon!

Goodbye November.

In October

In October, I listened to SO many hours of Mumford and Sons. Everyday Brother came home and I spent lots of time annoying him. I went to work, laughed at with kids, and taught them things. I enjoyed lots of New Girl and pulled my hair out watching presidential debates. I tried to upgrade to an iPhone and was denied. I survived hurricane Sandy and got a four day weekend out of it. I made a Halloween costume, baked some yummy things, and didn't buy ANY Halloween candy. I ran 3 times a week for the entire month and invested in a foam roller but don't really know what to do with it yet.

My goals for the month were:

1. Buy and listen to the new Mumford and Sons over and over and over.
Did I ever. I don't think I listened to anything else this month.

2. End the month with more money in the bank than I start the month with.
Thanks to the magic that is the three paycheck month, I definitely have more dollars in the bank today than I did on October 1st. But I did go a little shopping crazy this month. Oops.

3. Do lots of things from my Autumn 2012 list.
Um...I did some things...not lots. I wore sweaters and scarves (for decoration not for warmth), made applesauce, and sent lots of postcards.

4. Be crafty.
I was crafty in cooking, and costume making, and generally being sly...but I still want to do some paper crafting (a.k.a. minibooks).

5. Fill my weekends with friends and fun.
I honestly don't know what I did with my weekends. I saw some friends but not a lot. I had some fun but I also relaxed and went to Target and slept in on weekends.

October is typically my favorite month of the year but I was disappointed this year. I think I expect 31 days of cool, sunny, crisp days and instead got a whole lot of rain. The foliage was gorgeous this year but I didn't even enjoy it because it was always raining. Boo.

Hello October!

In October I want to:

Buy and listen to the new Mumford and Sons over and over and over.

End the month with more money in the bank than I start the month with.

Do lots of things from my Autumn 2012 list.

Be crafty.

Fill my weekends with friends and fun.

Won't you join me?

In September

In September, I said goodbye to summer and hello to fall. I made a new season to-do list and started working on it right away. I went to an Ansel Adams exhibit with Everyday Mom and tried on lots of hats. I picked apples, and ate apples, and made applesauce. I watched a lot of Breaking Bad. I relived all my summer adventures. I honed my hermitness and tried to adjust to good friends moving away. I went back to school/work and laughed at all of the funny things kids say.

My goals for the month were:

1. Eat an apple a day for the month of September.
I ate soooo many apples. I didn't eat one per day but I definitely ingested 30 apples over the course of the month.

2. Don't spend ANY money beyond necessities (rent, gas, groceries, bills).
I did really well on this goal. Aside from the necessities, I spent less than $25.00!

3. Fully catch up on blogging.
I have actually written ALL my summer recap posts and they are scheduled to be posted within the week! Stay tuned for lots of adventures.

4. Read a real book.
I started a few books and read a couple kids books, but I did finish the young adult novel Looking For Alaska by John Green. I loved it and have since requested the rest of his books from the library.

I've decided that September isn't my favorite month. It is a big adjustment to go back to school, it doesn't quite feel like fall, and people are super busy. Here's hoping for a more exciting October.

In June...

School ended.

Summer began.

The longest day of the year came and went.

Books were read.

Lots of shoes were bought. (Most will be returned.)

It was hot...and thunderstormy.

Pools were swam in.

Nails were painted.

Kidlets were tutored.

Parents traveled to Alaska.

Houses, dogs, and grandpas were sat.

Woodchucks wreaked havoc.

Movies were watched. Movies that rhyme with Tragic Bike.

Summer Fun lists were made.

Wedding invitations were made.

Dresses were tried on.

And so many hours of Dawson's Creek were watched.

June flew by...as all the months seem to do recently. The absence of a schedule always throws me for a loop. At first, I cannot fathom filling the empty time and I become antsy, lonely, and generally lost in space and time. But as the days pass by, I slowly get used to the idea of staying up late and sleeping in, spending entire afternoons reading books, and making plans for Sunday nights. And before long, I cannot fathom the idea of ever returning to work in the fall.

I guess it's a good thing that there are almost 2 months left of summer vacation!

Ode to June

In June

School will end paving the way for summer to begin.

The days will get longer then start to get shorter.

I will sleep in late and stay up later.

There will be sunshine and laughter.

I will write and read and walk and swim.

I will eat a lot of popsicles.

#2

Create a soundtrack of my 30th year...month by month style.

It's no secret that I love music. And one of the best things is hearing an old song that brings you back to a certain time and place, experience, or person. I will forever remember laying in a farm house in Tuscany listening to Maroon 5's Songs About Jane on my discman. (I carted that discman and CD cases across all of Western Europe!)

I often pop in old camp mixes on mini road trips and am transported back to a time when the only things that mattered were sewing felt banners, putting up tents while blindfolded, and one-match fires on the beach.

So to commemorate my 30th year, I will collect songs throughout the year.
Songs that are popular.
Songs that cheesy.
Songs that speak to my soul.
Songs that I love...however fleeting.

See my soundtrack here and do not judge me for my awesome taste in music.

In September

In September I got settled in to my new job, made new friends at said job, went candlepin bowling for the first time since middle school, tried new (vegan) foods, celebrated a lot of birthdays, cursed the hot/swampy weather, listened to a lot of Lady Gaga (I know!), embarked on an exciting new adventure (to be shared at a later date), avoided Dunks like the plague, and tip toed my way back into blogging.

It took me a few weeks to get settled back into a work routine.  Not that being unemployed was fun or easy, but it certainly allowed for more flexible sleeping windows.  I spent the first three weeks of school dragging myself out of bed and hoping there was time for a nap every afternoon.  But my circadian rhythm seems to have achieved some semblance of balance.

Working also means less blogging and less reading.  After some internal debate, I've decided that I am going to keep blogging because it is something that I enjoy.  But this time last year, I had 6 empty hours a day to fill with adventures and silly stories.  So expect to hear lots about second grade for now.

I don't know whether it is the fact that I am getting older or if I am wishing for time to slow before the inevitable 29+1 situation, but I could have sworn it was just the Fourth of July!  Summer passed in a flash and September was no exception.  But I'm excited for October.  It is my favorite month!  I'm not sure why but the sunny, brisk days have something to do with it.  So rain...be gone.

In October I want to:
1. Cook/bake at least 4 times.
2. Skype with all my besties.
3. Carve a pumpkin...but not too early!
4. Hang out with Everyday Brother.

In June

In June I hated on the Bruins and Michele Bachmann, attended a fab wedding, drank delicious blue margaritas, subbed for what I hope will be the last time ever, visited Maine where I completed #20 on The List, celebrated my 1st Blog Birthday, read a lot of books, cooked lots of zucchini, and listened to Matt Nathanson's new album 100,000 times.

June goals:
1. Eat something green at least 5 days a week.  Holy success Batman!  Feast your eyes on all the deliciousness I devoured.

And I will be continuing the "eat green" trend with this sucker as soon as I Google "How to cook an artichoke."

2. Be less of a hermit.  I had some hermit days but overall I visited with lots of people and generally played nice.

3. Clean my entire apartment.  If by clean I meant don't clean then I accomplished this goal every single day in June!

For my July goals, I am going with the same approach as my October goals...Aim Low.
1. Drink at least 64 oz of water per day.
2. Finish a minibook.
3. Watch 5 movies I've never seen before.
4. Cross 2 things off The List.

In May

In May I played teacher, ate a lot of chicken...and ice cream too, I mocked a religious outsider and said my farewells to the blog world in case of Rapture.  I survived the Rapture, did something crafty, stopped drinking juice, listened to a lot of Zac Brown Band, and made pretzels.  I finally settled on a blog design that I like, saw Something Borrowed and Bridesmaids, and made plans with far away besties for a summer adventure.

May was supposed to be my lucky month because it is an anagram for Amy but turned out to be quite the ho-hum month.  I don't even have anything to say about it.  I could whine about the blah-ness on the blog but I don't want to type it and you won't want to read it.  Instead, let's put May behind us and focus on June.

May goals:
1Walk 31 miles.  Walked 26.  Started off strong...then it rained for a whole week and I lost momentum.  Typical.
2Buy new sneakersDone.
3Cross at least one thing off The ListDone.

In June I want to:
1.  Eat something green at least 5 days a week.
2.  Be less of a hermit.
3.  Clean my entire apartment.

April was Blogapalooza

In April I listened to a lot of Adele,  was a substitute teacher for 5th and 6th grade, slacked on the crafting, slacked on the gym, and slacked on the social visits.  I ate more Easter candy (Easter season seemed to rival Christmas season this year), started watching Castle from the beginning, celebrated O-town's impending nuptuals with a fab bachelorette party, averaged a blog post per day, was a guest blogger over at Jumble Mash, played math tutor and killed a lot of bugs.

At the beginning of the month I felt on top of the world.  But the last two weeks of April my spirits took a face plant into the world of substitute teaching.  I had to try out the whole, "if you force a smile you will eventually feel better" theory.  Some days it worked better than others.  But May is a new month...and if you know me you know there are few things I love more than a new beginning.

Also May is an anagram for Amy...so that must be good luck.

My April goals were:
1.  Work.  In a classroom.  As a teacher.  Done, done and done.
2.  Get back on track with The List.  Still working at on-going goals but I did have a friend conned into offer to help.
3.  Cook more.  Bake more.  I cooked and cooked but didn't bake.  Boo.

In May I want to:
1.  Walk 31 miles.
2.  Buy new sneakers.
3.  Cross at least one thing off The List.

Adios March, Aloha April

In March I dodged a lot of road kill, read some interesting books, tried to train my hair to need less shampoo (unsuccessfully), bought a lot of GLEE songs with my iTunes gift card, joined the gym, said goodbye to the snow (hopefully), splurged on something to make the solo gym days more fun, let my apartment get messy, did away with Flashback Friday (because no one reads blogs on Friday) and adopted Six on Sunday (because I like making lists!)*, ate a lot of string cheese, stopped eating Easter candy, blog stalked some new people, and made yummy waffles (and by made I mean put chocolate chips, strawberries, and cream on top of toasted frozen waffles.)

My one goal for March was to sign up to substitute.  Of course me being me, this took about 3.5 weeks to accomplish but I am officially a substitute teacher...I think.  (I haven't actually been called to sub yet.)

March is typically one of those months that seems to go on forever but it flew by for me.  Probably because of that whole not doing anything productive with my life thing.  Of course when you want time to slow down it inevitably goes by even faster.  In February, I commented that with March comes spring.  I was mistaken.  March brings mud and roadkill season.  Hopefully April will bring spring.

In April, I want to do 3 things:
1. Work.  In a classroom.  As a teacher.
2.  Get back on track with The List.
3.  Cook more.  Bake more.

* Just spelled because wrong in three different ways (becuase, becasue, and becuse) because I'm super talented.

End of February Linkfest

In February  I celebrated my 29th birthday, tried some new gross foods, visited with my brother, felt underwhelmed after solving a Rubik's Cube, shoveled more snow, went to the gym to begin working towards goal #19 on The List, had more blog views than any previous month, was crafty, tried to be honest with myself, bought Easter candy instead of Valentine's Day candy, laughed out loud while reading a book, watching a movie, and having a conversation, and decided it was time to get back on the horse.

I didn't post any official goals for February because I made a move away from counting ducks and whatnot.  (If this confuses you, you may be a new reader and should check out my first post for some background and this post for an explanation of the changes I made.)

However, if you know me, you know that just because I didn't POST official goals does not mean that I didn't have any.  In fact, I had one goal.

Unposted Goal #1:  Finish 3 unfinished things.
Generally, my life looks like this:  I get really excited about a project, I do some research then begin said project, then I procrastinate, and then I get excited about a new project leaving the previous project unfinished.  But in February I successfully attempted the follow-through.

I finished my holiday minibook.
I finished my Seattle minibook.
I finished my first scarf (I say first because surprise, surprise I started a second scarf which I have yet to finish).

February flew by but I am excited that with March comes spring.  I already saw my first robin and the land beaver didn't see his shadow, so spring is bound to be here any day now.
